Bordeaux city is the centre of the wine region of Bordeaux in the Gironde departement in south-west France. This is the wine region that produces the most quality wine anywhere in the world. The total vineyard area exceeds 100,000 hectares. On the left bank of the river you have the Medoc, Graves (with Pessac-Leognan) and Sauternes. On the right bank you have Saint Emilion and Pomerol. In addition there are many less well known regions that would also deserve a mention.
In Bordeaux they make both red and white wine. The red wines often go under the name of 'claret' in English. They are usually a blend of several different grape varieties. The main grape vines for red are cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc. The white Bordeaux wines have seen a diminishing demand, and thus production, over the last half century - unfortunately so since there are many excellent white wines, both dry and sweet, produced in Bordeaux. The benefit, to the consumer, is that you can find many good-value white wines here.
It is also a region known for its fabulous chateaux. Especially in the Medoc region there is a large number of impressive palaces. In other parts of Bordeaux the chateau-density is generally less and vineyards are often smaller. But anywhere you go in Bordeaux you will be surrounded by vineyards and a winery chateau will not be far.
