30 imagesNot all wineries have spectacular buildings but many do. Or beautiful locations. Or just interesting architecture. Here's a selection of some interesting architectural constructions around the vineyards. Not all are winery buildings or chateaux. There are also towers - popular in the vineyards, think e.g. about Latour - and other buildings. One of the most spectacular (anywhere) is the Miroir d'Eaux and Place de la Bourse in Bordeaux. But there is much, much more. All images © copyright Per Karlsson, BKWine. Images may not be used without our permission.

78 imagesBordeaux city stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine. Use the image SEARCH function to find more relevant photos. Bordeaux, the city, is the capital of Bordeaux, the wine region, and of the Gironde district. It has a bit over one million in population. It is a magnificent travel destination, partially of course since it is the center of the wine country and a good base camp for visiting vineyards. But it is certainly a city that one should take a day or two to visit in itself. It is beautifully situated on the Garonne river, flowing out to the Gironde. The whole key-side, river front, is a spectacular architectural ensemble: the Place de la Bourse with it's unique fountain Le Miroir d'Eau, the Porte de Bourgogne, the Pont de Pierre bridge, Porte Cailhau etc etc. And one should not forget the old wine trader quarters, the stretch that is called Quai des Chartrons wich is now transforming into a fashionable residential area. Each Sunday there is a charming marché, farmers market, where one can browse for food, or perhaps have an early lunch on local oysters and white Bordeaux wine. The Grand Theatre, which is also called the opera, is an architectural master piece, the best view is when you arrive on the Cours de l'Intendent lined with luxury shops. The old town has some winding streets almost medieval in character (were it not for all the tourists). The Catehdral Saint Andre on the Place Pey Berland. And much more. The historic part of the city is now on the UNESCO list of World Heritage. There are many restaurants to satisfy your hunger, from the simple bistro to the gastronomic palaces - but curiously, until recently, it has been very difficult to find a good wine bar. If you want to go shopping for wine you will easily find some good wine shops. but it is perhaps more fun to go directly to the vineyards and the wineries to do you shopping for wine! 67 imagesBordeaux wine, vineyard, winery, winemaker, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine. THIS IS ONLY A SELECTION OF SAMPLES. Use the image SEARCH function to find more relevant photos. Bordeaux city is the centre of the wine region of Bordeaux in the Gironde departement in south-west France. This is the wine region that produces the most quality wine anywhere in the world. The total vineyard area exceeds 100,000 hectares. On the left bank of the river you have the Medoc, Graves (with Pessac-Leognan) and Sauternes. On the right bank you have Saint Emilion and Pomerol. In addition there are many less well known regions that would also deserve a mention. In Bordeaux they make both red and white wine. The red wines often go under the name of 'claret' in English. They are usually a blend of several different grape varieties. The main grape vines for red are cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc. The white Bordeaux wines have seen a diminishing demand, and thus production, over the last half century - unfortunately so since there are many excellent white wines, both dry and sweet, produced in Bordeaux. The benefit, to the consumer, is that you can find many good-value white wines here. It is also a region known for its fabulous chateaux. Especially in the Medoc region there is a large number of impressive palaces. In other parts of Bordeaux the chateau-density is generally less and vineyards are often smaller. But anywhere you go in Bordeaux you will be surrounded by vineyards and a winery chateau will not be far. All images © copyright Per Karlsson, BKWine. Images may not be used without our permission.

74 imagesThe town of Beaune, Burgundy, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine. THIS IS ONLY A SELECTION OF SAMPLES. Use the image SEARCH function to find more relevant photos. The small town of Beaune is the undisputed capital of the Côte d'Or, the heart of Burgundy's vineyards. The centre is full of restaurants and quite a few cafés. There are busy shopping streets and quite a few wine shops (but be careful - there are some tourist traps of course). There are also plenty of historical monuments, the one standing head and shoulder above all others is the Hospices de Beaune, also called Hôtel Dieu - the medieval hospital founded in 1443. It is also the prime example of the typical colourful Burgundian roof tiles. Beaune has a population of 22,000 and is part of the departement Côte d'Or in the Bourgogne region. It is a good place to stay if one wants to explore the wines and vineyards of Burgundy. All images © copyright Per Karlsson, BKWine. Images may not be used without our permission.

35 imagesDouro River Valley, Portugal, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine --- This is only a selection of samples. Use Image SEARCH to find more photos --- The Douro River is one of the five main rivers on the Iberian peninsula. In Spain it is called Duero. In Portugal it becomes the Douro. It flows out into the Atlantic by the twin cities Porto (Oporto) and Vila Nova de Gaia. Its source is at more than 2000 meter altitude in Spain and its length is more than 800 km. Its main claim to fame (at least for us) is as the home to port wines. But in recent decades it has also become an important wine region for "table" wines, DOC Douro wines. In Spain there are severa other more or less well known appellations along the river: Ribera del Duero, Arribes (del Duero) etc. It is without a doubt one of the most visually spectacular wine regions that we have ever seen. Starting in Porto you can travel up the valley, past Regua (Peso da Regua, even past Pinhao if you wish, and all along you will see spectacular scenery. the higher up the river you go the more amazing it is. In many places you cannot help thinking "how can anyone even get the idea to grow vines here?" The hills are covered with vineyards. And everywhere there are terraces. Hundreds, thousands, millions? Many of the terraces are only one or two rows of vines broad. In the old days all of this was no doubt constructed by hand. Today they have at least bulldozers to make new terraces. On virtually every hilltop there is a winery. When you get up to the winery, following a winding road, you have spectacular views all around. And surprisingly, many of the wineries have brand new installations. There has been a lot of investment recently in new buildings, new wineries, new vinification equipment. 76 imagesGreece Macedonia Wine & Vineyards Stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine. Macedonia is a region in Northern Greece, bordering to Macedonia-FYROM and Albania. It is one of the premier quality wine regions in Greece. It has seen many young and ambitious winemakers bringing established wineries to new levels or by creating new vineyards. There are several different wine producing sub-regions. The most famous vineyards are perhaps in Naoussa. One should not forget Drama, Amyntaio, Kaval, Epanomi and others. Most wine is red, often made from local indigenous varieties. Some traditional grape varieties that we find here are xinomavro, malagousia, agiorghitiko, mavrodaphne for red and for white wine assyrtiko, malagousia, moschofilero and roditis... Some of the best known quality wine producers are: Alpha Estate, Ktima Pavlidis, Wine Art Estate, Ktima Kir-Yianni Estate, the Amytaion Co-operative (also making much rosé and sparkling), Domaine Gerovassiliou, Ktima Biblia Chora, and the Boutaris Winery, to mention just a few. There is also a small vineyard run by the Tsantali winery on the famed monastic peninsula Mont Athos. Tsipouro is another local drink, a distilled spirit flavoured with aniseed, much like the French pastis (anisée) and ouzo. Use the SEARCH function to find more relevant photos.
